The Department of Chemistry began teaching and research in 1972 with five professorships as one of the first departments of the dual university Kaiserslautern-Trier. After the two campuses were separated again in 1975, Chemistry remained in Kaiserslautern. The department building was completed in 1983 and has a floor space of approx. 10,000 square meters. The department's central point of contact is the Dean's office.
The department's future research concepts provide for a focus along the profile lines of resource efficiency and sustainable development, interactions of light, spin and matteras well as life sciences and bioanalytics in fundamentals and applications. These topics are addressed by the research groups in individual projects and coordinated programs, such as the WERA Research Training Group, the CZS Breakthroughs projects Smart Batch Processes and Halocycles, as well as in the BioComp, NanoKat and OPTIMAS profile and potential areas funded by the State Research Initiative (FI). Further information can be found on the pages of the research groups .
The department offers Bachelor's and Master's degree programs in Chemistry, Chemistry and Business Studies and Economics, Food Chemistry and for the teaching profession Chemistry for the school types Gymnasium, Realschule Plus and vocational schools as well as the Master's degree program Toxicology. In addition, the department is involved to a large extent in the degree programs in Biological and Chemical Engineering (BCI) and Biophysics. If you have any questions about everyday student life, please contact the student representatives on the Chemistry Student Council or the relevant academic advisors.
