Fossil fuels such as oil, natural gas and coal are bad for the climate. They must therefore be replaced by environmentally friendly alternatives. Although sunlight and wind power are renewable energy sources that can ensure a sustainable energy supply in the future, only biomass can be considered for material use. The chemical industry is therefore working on developing innovative processes based on biomass for the production of important industrial chemicals that were previously produced using fossil fuels.
